Safety symposium, golf scramble set for Sept. 15

August 28, 2015
TOPICS: OIPA
The OIPA’s Leadership in HSE Fall Symposium and SAFE Scramble will return for a second stint at Norman’s Embassy Suites and Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club on Sept. 15.
The symposium is the premier conference focusing on leadership in the realm of Health, Safety and Environment. The event will feature speakers from a broad spectrum of the energy industry, with representatives from several major producers in attendance.
“I strongly recommend anyone involved with the health and safety of people attend the Leadership in HSE Symposium hosted by OIPA,” said Joyce Ryel, senior advisor for DOT and regulatory affairs for Superior Energy Services, and a panelist at last year’s event.
“Good leadership is essential to all aspects of business, but more so in HSE than any other area,” she said. “The challenges of implementing an HSE program and leading the way to a safe workplace cannot be accomplished without leadership skills.  Strong leadership helps transforms the potential of an incident free workplace into reality.”
The symposium’s focus is on leadership in all fields, not just for health, safety and environment professionals.
“Anyone who deals with HSE — operations, production, completion, servicing — will get something out of this conference,” said Phil Browder, OIPA Manager of Safety and Benefits.
The wide range of generational perspective offered up by the panel speakers is another plus.
“You’re going to find someone on the speaker list who is where you were, and someone who is where you’re going, “Browder said. “We have a Baby Boomer, two Generation X’ers and a Millennial. This event is about relating to people, so it will be interesting to see the different approaches.”
The symposium is dedicated to addressing leadership best practices specific to the management of HSE initiatives in the energy industry. Speakers for this event are chosen not only for their expertise in health, safety and environmental management, but they are also selected for their unwavering dedication to developing leadership within the energy sector.
Through the combination of talented speakers discussing relevant issues and the opportunity to network with like-minded HSE energy professionals, participants will form new and valuable knowledge, skills and attitudes that will serve them well beyond the boundaries of this symposium.
The symposium will feature opening remarks from OSHA Region 6 Director David Bates and a keynote luncheon address by Tom Oddie, Continental Resources Vice President of Health, Safety and Environmental.
In between will be a panel discussion on “HSE Leadership in a Challenging Economy.”
Panelists will include:
• Ralph Tijerina, SandRidge Energy manager of health and safety
• Leslie Rex Stockel, OGE Energy health and safety manager
• Vern Choquette, Trinity Services and consulting vice president of environmental and regulatory affairs
• Jeremy Hawthorne. Le Norman Operating environmental, health and safety manager
“Last year’s symposium was well worth taking a day away from my office and clients,” said TJ Riley, business risk advisor at The Bramlett Agency. “The value of spending time with safety professionals who are passionate about protecting our friends and neighbors who work in the oilfield was evident all day long.”
Following the morning symposium, participants will join in the SAFE Scramble golf tournament at nearby Jimmie Austin Golf club, near the campus of the University of Oklahoma, just 15 minutes from Embassy Suites.
Golfers can look forward to a number of door prizes awarded by random drawing, several hole prizes for success on the course, and cash prizes to the top foursomes.
Registration is now open for both the symposium and the SAFE Scramble, and limited sponsorship opportunities remain for each. Various sponsorship levels are available, ranging from $250 to $5,000. Exhibit booth space is also available for top-level sponsors. Call OIPA Manager of Safety and Benefits Phil Browder at
